Welcome To Emily's Blog!

Welcome to my blog! I am Emily and I am making this blog for Miss Lesher's 7th grade Language Arts class at the Wissahickon Middle School. This site will be used to compare 2 books. The books being compared are: The Giver and Gathering Blue, both wonderful books by Lois Lowry that our class had to read. This site will help you to better understand the two books and to discuss Lois Lowry's writing style in the two books. Hopefully it will be helpful and get you through the books!

Chapters 9-10 of The Giver

In Chapter 9 Jonas starts to feel separate from every one else. He starts to think his friends will act differently around him and he doesn't want that to happen. He reads his rules and he is appalled. He no longer has to share his dreams, he is allowed to ask anyone anything, and he no longer has to worry about being rude. His rules are totally different from anyone else in the community! And the most amazing rule was that he was allowed to lie.
In Chapter 10 Jonas goes to his first day of training. He meets The Giver and learns what he is going to have to do. He has to hold memories of the whole world for his whole community. What does this mean? No one in his community has any memories or any strong feelings because the community thinks it is too dangerous. One person has to hold all the memories or else they will all be released.
The Giver is going to give Jonas all his memories. He does this by putting his hands on Jonas's back and thinking about the memory. It is then transmitted to Jonas and Jonas learns new feelings and new words.
